Getting Stuck...

I hate it when things stick or get stuck. It never seems to be a good experience. Think about it:
  • You can get "stuck in the mud".
  • Or "stuck with the bill".
  • Or "stuck in first gear".
  • Or "stuck in the middle".
  • Or "stuck in a rut".
  • Baseball players get "stuck on third base".
  • Employees get "stuck working weekends".
  • Or "stuck in meetings all day".
  • When it's nasty out, you get "stuck inside".
  • "Stuck-up" people are generally considered unpleasant.
  • Zippers that get "stuck" are infuriating.
  • Likewise gum "stuck to your shoe".
  • It's not uncommon to hear someone say "The damn thing's stuck again!"
  • When you're mad, you might tell someone where to "stick it".
However, people are sometime glad they "stuck to their guns" and "stuck it out". Being "stuck on someone" can sometimes be a good feeling. "Sticking up for someone" can be noble.

Now I'm stuck trying to think of a good way to end this post...

I had a History teacher who used to say "stick it in your ear" all the time. Like as a substitute for "jump off a cliff" or "take a flying leap."

Also, my students are constantly threatening to stick one another.

Well, sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.

Damn, Randyluvspaiste beat me to my line.

Might I add one more stuck-- you never hear the Stealer's Wheel song "Stuck In the Middle With You" quite the same after seeing Reservoir Dogs.

Megan-- I began hearing that phrase when I became a public schoolteacher as well. I thought at first that they meant stabbing but they meant punching. The funny thing is that in 16 years in public education, I've never actually seen someone who threatened it carry it out. All the fights I've seen were without warnings.

George Carlin would be proud, but to meet his standards you need a lot more swear words.

Wasn't there an old commercial jingle for Band-Aids about "now they're stuck on you" or something like that?

Some Guy said...

Randy- I am!? Where?

Cherry- I would've figured you for a "Dancin' On The Ceiling" guy myself.

Megan- Stick it in your ear was often heard around my house growing up.

Flann- Duly noted...

Johnny- That's a disturbing scene for sure.

B.O.- Fuck! You're fucking right!

Slinger- I believe it was "I am stuck on Band-Aid brand 'cause Band-Aid's stuck on me!"
