Trying To Be An Informed Consumer...

I am in the market for a new melon baller. When buying a melon baller, a lot of factors must be taken into consideration: construction, material, weight, versatility (can it make two different sized balls), cost, and aesthetics.

Here are some of my options:

This one is offered at TheKitchenDrawer.com. At $1.49, it is reasonably priced. I'm not crazy about the color and it looks a bit flimsy. However, for a double-baller, the price can't be beat.

This one by KitchenAid retails for $7.49. As you can see, it is a single-baller. It is streamlined and sturdy, but I don't like the KitchenAid name on the handle. Why should I be forced to do their advertising for them?

This is the Gel-Grip Melon Baller by KitchenArt (not to be confused with KitchenAid). This is the Rolls-Royce of ballers at $10.80. Again, it's a single-baller, but that Gel-Grip handle could prove a lifesaver, given all the balling I do.

This is a major purchase, so any guidance in this matter from people that do a lot of balling would be appreciated.

Chris, I have the most amazing melon baller on the planet. I shit you not. It is better than your so called "cadillac of melon ballers", or whatever it is you said. It is NOT ONLY a melon baller, but also has a rinder on the other end. That's right. You can ball your melon, and rind some fruit. Oranges, limes, lemons, the possibilities are endless. I make a mean fruit salad and then top it with orange rind. Adds a blast of flavor to your meal. It's a party in your mouth.

Ahem, "Rolls Royce" of melon ballers. I apologize.

Why are in the market for a new melon baller? What’s wrong with the old melon baler, and, more importantly, how do you wear out a melon baler. There is no friction in a melon to cause ware and tare. Or is this one of those Freudian things that people use to confuse me? Two balls or one? I had a friend who had testicular cancer, had a ball removed, and his wife said that after, when he got excited, it looked like an explanation point.

Anything involving melons or balls is worth spending the money. Go high end.

Perhaps the Messermeister Oval, Scalloped Melon Baller, available online from Kendel Cutlery, would serve your melon balling needs. Unless you hate oval balls like poison.

KitchenAid...
I'd go with the KitchenAid

I'd go for the cheap one. . .twice the balling at a mere fraction of the price. Color is not important when it comes to ballers.

I have the cheap one, the Kitchen Aid one, and one that makes fancy fluted ovoid balls. I usually use the cheap one when I am making melon balls. I also have a combination rinder and zester that makes for fancy garnishes, although for serious zesting I prefer the extra fine microplane grater. DOes this help clear things up?

is it just me or does the last one look like it 2bles as a personal "massager".

I'm currently working on the patent for the swiss army melon baller.

Boob Lady- How much did that baby set you back? Do you know the Kelly Blue Book value?
Coffeypot- The end of your comment cracked me up!
Geo- Wow! An oval baller adds a whole new dimension to my search!
Megan- The price is appealing. I suppose as long as it's not a blue baller, It's be OK.
Lulu- Fluted AND Ovoid! My head is spinning!
Idig- Welcome! Let me know when you are ready to market those.
B.O.- Exactly what I was thinking.

I have a melon baller, which I never use. I've tried to make melon balls in the past, and, maybe it's the crap baller I have, but they never turn out like balls. They are always smooth on one side and raggedy on the other.

Maybe I don't have the right balling technique. Perhaps you should take a balling class and consult your instructor on the best tool.

I wish you luck in your search, but I'm not going to help you with this decision. I've been down this road once and it's too painful and disappointing to revisit.

I wanted to tell you that in my experience, you purchase whatever type Alton Brown tells you to purchase. He did a blip about ice cream scoops once, and when it came time to buy a new one, I knew exactly which features/benefits to hunt for. I have never looked back!

I once had mellon baller A. I'm not sure where it is today. The bottom one is the most phallic, which would entice me to buy it.
