Conveyance...

For me, the most enjoyable forms of conveyance are ones without motors.

-I'd much rather paddle a kayak than ride in a powerboat. Even with all the lakes around me, I have never ridden a waverunner, believe it or not. When I lived on the lake I'd come home from work and paddle the mile across to the other side. On the way back I'd stop in the middle and just sit and watch the sun dance on the waves. It is very meditative. Being so close to the water is a cool sensation.

-I'd much rather ski than ride a snowmobile. On the ski patrol, I'm required to do both. Snowmobiles are loud. They ruin the serenity of a quiet, snowy day.

-I'd much rather ride a bike than a motorcycle. Again, they're loud and there's no sense of accomplishment when you get to the top of a big hill.

-Although I haven't tried it yet, hang-gliding looks like something I would really enjoy.

Of course, this is just my opinion. If you had the choice, what form of conveyance would you choose?

A high performance, low profile sport coupe, a litter, or the Heart of Gold.

I had a sputtering snorting little '72 Fiat 124 Spider Convertable. It ran only intermittently, and it was made almost entirely out of Bondo. But God I loved that car.

I'd like to just grow my own wings and fly.

I guess the closest would be hang-gliding, which I also have not tried.

In the 60s, we were told that in the 21st century, we'd all be flying around with our own personal jet packs.

I want mine already!

You don't have your jet pack yet? Mine came for Y2K. Also, I would choose to use moon boots to hop everywhere.

Flannery- What is the Heart of Gold. Am I missing something?
Lulu- Sounds hot!
Mixed Nut- I've always wanted to go up in a hot air balloon.
Jen- Downhills are the shit!
B.O.- Teleportation is taking way too long to be invented.
Amy- I have the flight dream all the time.
Vikki- I blame republicans.
Boob Lady- Canada is always on top of shit like this.

The Heart of Gold is the ship that Zaphod Beeblebrox stole in Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. It runs on the infinite improbability drive. It is a sweet ass ride.

Sorry, I posted the above comment under Doc's ID.

Hey Chris,
I'm interested! Did you build that kayak yourself by carving it out of wood? I only say this because it looked liked fiberglass. What about the ski's that support you on the good ole' ski patrol? Wood or composite? I only say this because those things that you choose to use or the activities you partake in had to get there somehow. Like powerboats, power trucks, or perhaps even a snow mobile (probably not a dog sled). They are not manifestations of the mind. Don't tell me, you don't shop at Wal-Mart either. I'm not trying to bust your balls but until we as a society really make a real attempt to change our liestyle altogether from a fossil fuel-centric to a more self-sustainig one, we're all in trouble. You should check out the book, The Long Emergency by James Kunstler. It will blow your hair back. I love the outdoors, I love nature, but until we get a grip on globalization (China) we're all fucked. I'm not saying I'm responding to your post on a computer powered by a mouse wheel, but we all need to make lifestyle changes. The things we cherish will slowly fade away if we keep up our addiction to fossil fuels. We need more solar powered, wind powered, and nuclear powered options or that kayak you cherish so much will become a permanet home, especially since those ice-caps are a meltin'

I'd ride a horse everywhere.

Ronin- I don't know if you misunderstood the point of my post. It was not to offer some critique on the different means of transportation or the pros and cons or their environmental impact. I was just saying that, in general, I ENJOY non-motorized forms of conveyance over motorized. I applaud your efforts to advocate lifestyle changes. You tactics seem a little odd. You don't know me apart from this blog and if you go back and read, you'll find that I am not a big consumer. By the way, I responded to your nuclear comments down the page in case you're interested.

Actually I understood your post just fine. And, I figured you weren't a big consumer, that's what the Wal-Mart comment was for. Thanks for the response.
