Feeling Minnesota...

I'll be in Minneapolis this weekend for a bachelor party. I haven't been there in a while. Does anybody know if there is anything to do besides going to see the giant spoon?

Last time I was there we hung out at a great dive bar called "Liquor Lyle's". They had like six happy hours throughout the day. During happy hour you'd get two drinks for the price of one and tons of free appetizers. Unfortunately I've read that the new owners hipped it up and it lost much of its appeal.

By the way, don't even think of recommending the "Mall Of America" to me.

Hang out at Prince's place. Kevin Smith recommends it.

You need Mindy June and Coaster Punchman. They know every about MPLS. I just know things to do with a 3 year old, since I got there to visit my niece.

Isn't that where they keep Garrison Keillor? Ask him if he's busy.

Is it even possible
to have fun in that state??

Ice fishing? Beer drinking? Being Lutheran?

Just don't invade people's personal space.

I was at the airport earlier this summer. It has better shopping than the mall near me.

What is it with Minnesota and malls/shopping? Is that all there is to do there?

Oh, and I'm not recommending the airport mall... I was just saying... that's all I know around there. I didn't even know about the spoon.

They don't have sales tax on clothing, and maybe on other things too, I don't really know. So if you are a power shopper, it makes sense to shop there.

Is Vegas over? Is Minneapolis the new destination spot for bachelor parties?

I suggest partying like it's 1999.

My wife is from near Minneapolis (Chaska), and went to school at the U of M. A few weeks ago, we went to visit her family, my first visit to Minnesota. She took me to a number of her old hangouts (including First Street). My favorite, by far, was Liquor Lyles. If I lived there in my twenties, it would have been one of my hangouts. I didn't even know about the two drinks thing, and she had forgotten about it. We were pleasantly surprised. It's probably too late, but I recommend it if you get there again.

BTW, she met her ex-husband at Page One (the place in Purple Rain). When we were there, we hung out there, saw a couple of little bands (including one from Chicago, where we live.) She bought me a First Street t-shirt. When he came to pick up my step-daughter for her visitation time with him, I answered the door wearing that shirt. Hee-hee-hee.... mean old me.

PS

Avoid Barfly, which is right by First Street, like the plague. We went by there because my wife's niece's boyfriend is a bartender there and we'd promised we'd stop by and say hello. The place is like a b-movie version of a European disco. The boyfriend is a nice guy, but served us those shots with Jagermeister and Red Bull (yuk!). We said hello, finished our drinks and moved on.

Lulu is right, Mindy June & I spent most of our early 20s drunk at Liquor Lyles. Pitchers were like practically free. A word to the wise (you're probably back by now anyway) - I suffered food poisoning from a grilled cheese there once and spent the night in the hospital. But I kept going back - just not for the food.
