Documentary Film Of The Day: Hearts Of Darkness...
Finally! I have been waiting forever to see this movie. I love docs about the making of movies. "Hearts Of Darkness" did not disappoint. It is the story of the making of the Vietnam epic, "Apocalypse Now", a film that went WAY over budget and took WAY longer to shoot than originally expected. It was shot by Eleanor Coppola, director Francis Ford Coppola's wife and includes taped conversations that were made without Francis' knowledge. In them, he talks about how he is convinced the movie is no good. At one point he considers suicide. There is some great stuff, including the insane ad-libbing of Marlon Brando. One of the things I could've done without was all the footage of Coppola's hairy man-boobs, but it was still a great movie.

I swallowed a bug
Dang it! Splotchy stole my comment!
But how about the balls on Coppola, huh? He gets Martin Sheen drunk & naked, emotionally manipulates him, and then rolls film. Awesome.
If you'd like to read a documentary about the making of a movie, I've got two for you:
The Man Who Heard Voices by Michael Bamberger (about Lady in the Water)
The Devil's Candy by Julie Salamon (about Bonfire of the Vanities)
Successful books about failed flicks.
good god, wasn't the unexpergated flick enuff of a head trip already??
It was painful to watch but made rewatching Apocolypse Now manditory and way more compelling than it already is.
I watched that in my Doc film class a hundred years ago (ok, maybe only 10). What a clusterfuck making that movie was, huh?
You can do with out hairy man boobs? What kind of heterosexual monster are you anyway?
Hey, since Splotchy struck first and got to say my favorite Marlon Brando quote, I'll make a movie recommendation instead.
If you liked this movie, take a look at "Burden of Dreams" it's a documentary about Werner Herzog's meltdown filming the movie "Fitzcarraldo" with Klaus Kinski.
Splotchy- Loved it!
Vikki- It was hard to hear what Coppola was saying to him. I'll have to re-watch that part with the volume up.
Geo- I'll check 'em out.
HL- No. It's one thing to see people acting like they're going insane. It's more fun to see it actually happening.
TLWDL- Agreed.
Gizmo- I can't even imagine the level of frustration, especially with those huge scenes with the helicopters and explosions.
Dr.- Forgive me.
Bubs- Burden Of Dreams is another great one and similar in a lot of ways. Jungle. Big shoot. Natives.
Dude, how did you get it? My Netflix queue says "very long wait" even though it's been at the top of the queue since released.
GKL- Mine said the same thing for a long time. I guess I got lucky.
