This afternoon I was addressing a letter.
The zip code had an eight in it.
For as long as I can remember,
I have made my eights by drawing
two distinct, individual ovals,
one on top of the other.
And yet,
for some unknown reason
I made this one figure eight-style
with one unbroken curve.
I have no idea where it came from.
Immediately after I did it,
it was strange enough for me to stop
and wonder,
"What the fuck was that?"

Maybe your were doing 8-balls?
Dude, the introspection never stops with you does it.
I love this post.
Our baby's all growns up!
honey, I wonder "what the fuck was that?" many, MANY times I stop by here....
I am usually a figure eight guy, but some times I'll switch it up and do two circles. I have also been able to ctach glimpses of the underlying Goldbergian logic, but would not be able to offer a satisfactory explination as to a sound "why." But it comforts me greatly to know that other human beings have wrestled with this. Thank you.
I recently started addressing everyone by "Admiral".
Is that the same sort of thing?
Well, I'm no hand-writing analyst, but I pretty sure it means your great Aunt is coming for a visit.
It's all downhill from here
Oh, you poor dear! All these years, you haven't been making "eights," you've been making "two distinct, individual ovals, one on top of the other!" They were NOT EIGHTS! Now, you have finally mastered the "unbroken curve," the true figure eight, and you are questioning yourself. Perhaps you should seek therapy, and discover what deep, forgotten trauma (probably occuring in the first or second grade) led to this rare and poorly understood affliction.
