I read Sammy's autobiography "I Can," about 20 years ago. It was very interesting. He related the horrifying story of how he lost his eye, in an auto accident. So yeah, I knew about it.
My favourite SDJ anecdote, okay the only SDJ anecdote I remember is hearing that he was stopped by a cop speeding and when the officer asked him if he knew he was way over the speed limit he said: I've got one good eye, you want me to keep it on the road or on the speedometer?

I actually knew about him but I am another one who thought Sandy Duncan had one, as well.
