I'm A Crybaby...

I'm usually on a pretty even-keel when it comes to my emotions. I don't cry very often. My tear ducts remain dormant, for the most part, with the exception of the times I happen to view certain movies.

However, during the last year I've probably shed more tears than I have in the last ten combined. Many involve airport goodbyes before Megan moved here. Yesterday I was a blubbering, snot-dripping mess. My mom made the excruciating decision to put down our family dog, Bubba. Bubba was our only dog (sorry I don't have a pic) and had been with us for the last 15 years. Like anyone's dog, he was the best - loyal, playful, and unconditionally loving. In his later years he developed arthritis and lost much of his sight and hearing, yet still maintained a vitality that precluded any consideration of euthanasia. Ultimately, though, his quality of life declined to the point where the only humane thing was to end his suffering. It will be tough to think about going back to my mom's and not seeing him and how excited he'd get when we'd come home.

I'll miss you, Bub-meister!

Sorry to hear about your dog. I recently had my pet euthanized and it was heart breaking for me. It's tough to lose a loved one (four or two-legged).

Oh man Chris, I have been there so many times, and the hurt never gets easier to deal with.

I hope you have another chance, with another dog, to have that wonderful non-conditional love.

It's so weird the first few times that a pet is gone after you're used to them being there year after year. Sorry about Bubba.

Oh, I'm so sorry, Chris. That's always so tough. All our family pets die on my watch, so I know that feeling well.

Poor Bubba. He was a good dog.

Perhaps this exchange from 'The Simpsons' will make you smile:

Homer: I want to tell you about the most wonderful place in the world: Doggie Heaven. In Doggie Heaven, there are mountains of bones, and you can't turn around without sniffing another dog's butt! And all the best dogs are there, Old Yeller, and about eight Lassies.
Bart: Is there a Doggie Hell?
Homer: Well… of course, there couldn't be a heaven if there weren't a hell.
Bart: Who's in there?
Homer: Oh, uh… Hitler's dog… and that dog Nixon had, what's his name, um, Chester…
Lisa: Checkers.
Homer: Yeah! One of the Lassies is in there, too. The mean one! The one who mauled Timmy!

Sorry, Chris. Pets are part of the family. I wish they'd develop breeds that would last longer. I sure hate saying goodbye to a well-loved pet. May Bubba rest in peace.

Oh, Chris, I'm sorry to hear about that. The only time I saw my dad cry as a kid was when he put down our dog.

I had to put down my favorite dog ever, Dougal McDuff, a year ago for bloat, and I still miss him.

Our sympathies.

I'm sorry to hear that.

Look at it this way, Bergman and Antonini now have a dog to play fetch with.

I'm sorry to hear that.

When I was 19, I moved to Salt Lake City for a few months. While I was there, they put down Partly, the dog we'd had since I was 2. I had to go to my room and cry. I was angry-- no one stayed with her while they gave her the shot.

I'm sorry Chris. I know how bad it is to loose a pet. They're family, after all.

A few years ago my mom had to put down our family dog. Her name was Katrina and she had suffered from repeat attacks of bronchitis. The vet did everything he could for her, but eventually her lung collapsed and there was no choice but to put her down. She was the sweetest baby you could imagine.

I painted her portrait a couple of years before she died and I thought my mom would take it down after Katrina passed away, but it's still hanging on the living room wall. Mom decided to keep it up because it brings her good memories. Thinking about the joy Bubba brought into your life will help alleviate the sadness.
