How Have I Made It This Long Without Posting About Zamfir?...

Vikki's comment in my last post jogged my memory about Zamfir.

Who among us hasn't luxuriated in the dulcet tones of Zamfir, master of the panflute?

(Or at least can remember the cheesy K-Tel commercials for his albums that used to play ad nauseum during old Brady Bunch reruns?)

My dad calls it the "pan-fried flute".

Well I, for one, am totally amazed that Mister Zamfir just sort of faded away. I guess I was expecting better, really...

He tried to go more hard and mean, spiking his hair and plugging his panflute into a huge rack of Marshall stacks.

It was a sad time for Zamfir, and he never recovered...

I'll take Zamfir over Yanni any day.

I saw these guys in a small town in Peru out in the street, jamming on those things. It was cool.

wait a second-- where's the microphone picking up his pipes?? Maybe this is all a big ruse!!!

He's good, yes, but how good is he w/o that big ol' orchestra behind him? Like Getkristi, I remember a 4 man band from Peru playing traditional Latin America and Hispanic music in a town square in Santa Fe, NM, and those guys absolutely kocked me out with various panflutes and guitar. I might have to say they were even BETTER than ol' Zammy.

I'm pretty sure he did the Karate Kid soundtrack.

Zamfir almost ruined "Once Upon A Time In America" for me, playing that same f*ckin' refrain over and over and over again.
