Eating Out...

When I was growing up, we didn't eat out at restaurants very often, so when we did it was kind of a big deal. Now, I'm not sure if this is due to a Midwestern tendency to always try to be happy with what you get or whether it was specific to my family, but no matter if we were eating somewhere fancy or ordering Moons Over My Hammy at Denny's, we would always ooh and aah over each dish as the server placed them before us - no matter what. It usually went something like this:

-Ooh, wow! Christopher, look at that!
-Ooh, that looks SO good!
-Wait, what did you get? Oh, I thought about ordering that. Yum!
-That's HUGE! How will you ever finish?
-Oh my! Mmm MMM!
-Dad, what's that? Goat balls in caramel sauce? Wow!
-Mom, that ragweed salad looks amazing!
-Here, try some of mine. Isn't that good!?

It must have been a Midwestern thing because we did that kind of thing too whenever we went out when I was a kid.

So did we, and we also almost NEVER ate out. Favorite story: some good friends of my parents took their family out for the once-in-a-blue-moon steak dinner. When the steaks came, the 6-year-old daughter squealed "JESUS CHRIST MOM! THAT'S A BIG PIECE OF MEAT!".

That tendency extended to my small mountain community also. A big deal was made about something fancy like fish or pasta instead of the typical meat and potato dinner.

Ohhhh, I was thinking of a different kind of post from that title.

Tee hee.

Yep, a midwestern thing. We still do it.

I'm on the same page as Marni.

And why is it that any reference to Moons Over My Hammy is always funny? To EVERYONE?

It's still like that in my family. Whenever I go home we eat out a lot and we all inspect each other's dinner with enthusiasm. Just don't try EATING any of my dinner, greedy guts. I ordered for me. If you wanted to taste the goddamn chimmy chungas you can damn well ORDER the goddamn chimmy chungas. THESE ARE MY CHIMMY CHUNGAS, BITCH!

Ahem...

No wonder I don't get invited home very often.

We were a different kind of Midwestern family- we didn't have time to "ooh" and "aah" because we generally were grunting & stuffing your faces with cheesy potato skins and chili fries within .05 seconds of the plates hitting the table.

We had 5 kids in my family so we didn't eat out often either.

And when we did..it was sweeet.

My family eats out a lot and we're still doing that! It's probably because food is so good
